Meet Dan Carney!

Q) How did you get into doing stand up comedy?

A) I feel like I grew up on comedy. I grew up watching movies like Tommy Boy, The Great Outdoors, and Ace Ventura. Jim Carrey absolutely blew my mind. I always figured I’d try something with comedy, so I did my first open mic when I was 17, which went pretty well. However, I didn’t do stand-up again until I was 20, and I only did it like three more times before stopping again until I was 21. I’ve been doing it consistently for ten months now. Those years not doing comedy helped me realize that this is what I want to be doing with my life, looking at it now versus then.

Q) What do you want visitors and locals to know about doing stand up comedy that they may not already know?

A) I guess what I didn’t know going into stand-up is that there is so much more that goes into it than what I initially thought. The order of jokes, the pacing, the way you tell the jokes, the first joke, the last joke, there’s a lot to take into consideration. I guess what people should know is that it really sucks, but it’s also insanely fun. It gets good, and it gets bad. But I’m a masochist, so I do comedy.

Q) What is the Tallahassee comedy scene like these days?

A) The comedy scene here has been a lot of fun for me. I have some amazing friends that do comedy with me and it makes the experience exponentially more enjoyable. Bird’s is probably the closest thing we have to a comedy club, and Scott Peavy has done a great job holding down shows there for something like seven years now. I’ve been able to produce three of my own shows here, really just trying to expand the scene because I want more places for myself and other comics to perform. I have a show at Blue Tavern now, named “Blue Comedy”, and now a weekly show at the Pavilion starting March 19, titled “Manic Mondays”.

Q) What’s the craziest thing to happen to you at a show?

A) A woman gave birth on stage and the baby did five minutes on Tinder dating.

Q) What’s next for you?

A) I’ll probably follow around the Grateful Dead for a few years and see how I feel after that. That, or move to New York City and pursue a career in comedy. It’s all up in the air.

Q) Describe stand-up comedy in 5 words or less

A) A stupid and smart thing.

Q) Where can people find you on social media?

A) I’m @danmancarney on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Also check out my podcast on the Podcast App; “Dan Carney Presents: The Theory of Nothing Podcast”. Just search my name on there. Also, if you’re trying to book me (do it), my website is http://www.danrcarney.com.
