The Turkey Drive started 4 years ago as a way to help reach out into our community and help. We had done some small events with “Second Harvest of the Big Bend” and this idea was a great way to help them on a larger scale. Through the years it has grown and continues to grow every year thanks to the generosity of the community.
What do you want visitors and locals to know about the WTXL Turkey Drive that they may not already know?
WTXL puts this whole thing together, but “Second Harvest of the Big Bend” is the big winner. ALL of the donations, from Turkey’s to Cash to Checks goes straight to them. And with their buying power, they’re able to multiply a single dollar into four and help feed thousands of people in our community.
How has the WTXL Turkey Drive grown since it started?
We’ve gone from helping raise enough money and collect enough turkeys for close to 14,500 meals for families here in our area, to last year being able to provide over 73 thousand meals.
What brings people to the WTXL Turkey Drive?
We have such an amazing community here that wants to help out. We’ve had senior citizens in George see our drive on television and have their community driver bring them on down to make a donation, to a young boy who took some of his savings, asked his mother to take him to the store so he could buy a turkey and bring it down to a homeless man who had $3 dollars and gave it to the cause. Neighbors helping neighbors is a huge part of what makes this event so special.
What’s next for the WTXL Turkey Drive?
Trying to make THIS year even better than last! The day after the Turkey Drive ends for one year, we start planning for next. Our goal right now is to get the word out to anyone and everyone to come on down to the Ponce Delon Park on November 16th and drop off a turkey, cash, or check. Hold off on that Starbucks daily coffee for a week and put that money together and make your donation, every bit helps!
Where can people find the WTXL Turkey Drive on social media?
