Entertainment Spotlight : Kal Marks

How did the Kal Marks band get started?

Kal Marks started in my sisters bathroom, my senior year of high school (2006). I had bought a four track cassette tape machine with the intention of recording songs. I brought into the bathroom cause I like the reverb in that room. I moved to Boston and was playing solo shows in living rooms and such. I really hated it, so i decided to make a band. The first version of the band started in 2009 or 2010. I can’t quite remember.

What do you want visitors and locals to know about the Kal Marks band that they may not already know?

We aren’t all doom and gloom. We’re pretty silly fun people. I understand our songs seem dark and depressing but, thats because the world is dark and depressing. Our songs are a reflection of ourselves, and we are a reflection of the world around us. Is that too corny???

What’s the craziest thing to happen at a show?

I have no idea. People can be pretty peculiar with their behavior at shows but nothing really leaps out to me. We met Mike Watt, Will Oldham, David Pajo, John McEntire at our shows. Those are some serious heroes.

Where would you like to play that you haven’t yet?

We still haven’t been to the west coast, and we really want to. I’d like to play in Japan. I think we are planning on going to Europe in May.

What’s next for you?

We have a tour this fall. After that we are going to get ready for another record. Have no idea when that’ll be out but we’re going to record early 2017. Hopefully by then there’ll be a new season of Stranger Things.

What social media does the Kal Marks band use?

We make stupid posts on facebook and instagram. Mostly non important, but you can find tour dates there.
