Entertainment Spotlight : Tara Sands

When did you know you wanted to be a voice actor?

I always wanted to be an actor, and when I was in high school I got sent on an audition for a commercial voice over. I had never really thought about that as a job before, but I booked the gig, and I was hooked!

What do you want visitors and locals to know about being a voice actor that they may not already know?

The industry has changed so much since I started. You used to need to live near a big city to go to auditions and record, but now you can live anywhere and find auditions online! Setting up a recording studio is way cheaper than it was in the past.

How has the industry evolved over the years?

Technology has really changed everything, like I said earlier. Also, we are hearing more celebrities than ever before in commercials and animation. They found out how much fun our job was!!

What’s the craziest thing to happen during a voice over session?

I got to stand next to Mark Hamill at a recording session once, and just working on the same project as him was exciting and crazy for me!!

How do you get into character?

Sometimes I know ahead of time what character I’ll be playing and some times I don’t find out til I get there. Often it’s multiple characters. So, I don’t want to get too locked in to one, in case other characters come up! I just make sure I am vocally ready for anything, and then once I start playing the character I figure out my stance and body language to match the character’s energy.

In what scenario would your characters that don’t normally crossover do so?
Oh, that’s a good one! I would love to see Bulbasaur show up in an episode of Barbie Life In The Dreamhouse! The girls would squeal and shriek and find him “adorbs.”
