The compusion to create art has always been with me. I can remember drawing horses and drafting fashion designs as early as 3rd grade. While my interests in art remained, it shifted between mediums and themes as I got older. Music was very important to me, along with writing. Still unsure of what I wanted to do in life, I took advanced placement art classes in high school. In college, I started my degree in graphic design, because a common idea is that it’s the only way to persue art and not starve! Sadly, I hated graphic design and was terrible at it! Luckily, I fell in love with illustration while taking required classes for my degree, and promptly changed my focus to illustration. Got my first paid freelance art job at age 19, and soon became an officially licensed Lucasfilm artist. It was around that time when realized I can make money doing something I love.
What do you want visitors and locals to know about being an artist that they may not already know?
Artists work extremely hard to perfect their craft! It’s a labor of love and obsession. We also have to be well versed in many different areas of running a business. We are constantly learning, constantly pushing ourselves to our limit. And we like girl scout cookies.
How has the industry evolved over the years?
I have noticed more women creators in the entertainment industry, and they are treated with more equality, which is awesome. I’ve always felt that whoever is best for the job, regardless of gender, should get the job. It’s really nice to see that concept explode and open up the art world even more over the last few years.
I’ve also noticed more substance and emotion in mainstream entertainment. People want intelligence and wit. People want to see complex characters and thought provoking stories, moreso than in recent years. Or maybe as I’ve gotten older these things are more on my radar now? Haha!
What inspires you for your art?
What inspires me: Romantic love, self introspection, friends and family, life experiences, movies, music, and the painting masters who have come before me.
What’s next for you?
Next up for me is more painting! I’ve recently learned a new oil painting technique, and I can’t wait to do more with that. We also have quite a few conventions coming up in the next few months. Hoping to get a sketchbook together, I’ve been wanting to do that for years now!
