When did you know you wanted to be a comedian?
*I never wanted to be a comedian when I was growing up. I always wanted to be an actor. The idea of being someone else was enticing to me. I think stand-up is virtually the opposite. You ONLY have yourself. You have to be honest and vulnerable with your struggles. That’s where funny comes from. The most obvious and more prominent struggle for me is that I stutter, and I didn’t always. After I got hit with a softball which changed me voice, my friend encouraged me to try stand-up. The rest kind of fell into place.
How has the comedy scene changed for you since being on Americas Got Talent?
*I wouldn’t say the scene has changed all that much. People come and go, and that’s about the only thing that changes in comedy. For me personally, I would say more opportunities for stage time have opened up since being on the show.
What do you want visitors and locals to know about live comedy?
*Go to live comedy to have a good time. Rarely do people regret it. Movies will always be there, and I’m not saying choose one over the other. But try to do both. People got careers because of stand-up: Ray Romano, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart. You might get to see the next big comic before their career takes off. What a cool thing to be a part of. There’s nothing quite like getting to see people make their problems hilarious in a live setting.
What’s the craziest thing you and Stella have gotten into?
*We get into all kinds of shenanigans. We’re best friends, which sounds silly because we don’t speak the same language. But in a way we do. Dogs are so in tune with who we are at our core, that they understand us. I guess the craziest thing is people want to take pictures with Stella. Sometimes just her haha. That’s odd to me. I feel like her career is going better than mine.
What was it like being on Americas Got Talent and getting as far as you did?
*I was honored to be part of the show. I certainly didn’t plan on getting as far as I did, so every week I just kept showing up like “Here’s my best stuff, hope you like it?” And since traveling around the country, I’ve gotten to see all the amazing support I had on the show. It’s very surreal.
