We are featuring Jazz Copeland! Here’s what they had to say and be sure to keep them in mind for your holiday parties!

What brings you to Tallahassee?
A: We all gravitated to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University College of Music.
How did Jazz Copeland come about?
A: Jazz Copeland was founded by me (Brandon) in Spring of 2014. I wanted to form a group that was completely different from the other bands in town. The music scene in Tallahassee has gone through several phases and I wanted to revive the jazz scene in a different format. My band consist of the VERY best musician in town (my opinion). We wanted to make music that not only represents our culture of jazz music, but make music that derives from all of our backgrounds. We all come from different walks of life and the one thing we all have in common is that we love to make great music that people will always feel good after listening to us. It’s the band that’s got everyone turning their heads, a band that seamlessly merges elements from jazz, pop and soul in a way that defies definition. Described by Jazz & Blues Florida as “imaginative and creative in ways different from the past and present,” they’re anything but your run-of-the-mill jazz or pop band. All five members came together as a band in Tallahassee, Florida in the Spring of 2014. Having all been a part of Florida State University’s College of Music, they decided on their name by way of Copeland Street, the street the music building faces. “It’s where we hung out and shared ideas. We grew as people and musicians right off of that street, so it only seems fitting,” explains Evan, a professional pianist since age 17.It isn’t just their tasteful choices of covers and standards, or even their unique originals that set them apart from the rest. It’s their distinctive approach to a song and how they twist it inside-out into something fresh and new that really captures people’s hearts and minds. “There’s just so much to explore in a song. It’s freeing to just open your mind and let a song take you to that new place where it feels it wants you to go,” says Avis, who has toured internationally and shared the stage with Bobby McFerrin and Dave Brubeck. “At first we didn’t really have a clear idea of what our sound was going to be like, but as we played together it just started to click. Soon we knew that we were creating something different.”Ever since it’s founding, the band has been on a mission of fun with a purpose. “We want to bring jazz into the light of the 21st century,” exclaims Brandon, who has performed in such famous venues as Blues Alley and The Jazz Estate, “infusing it with pop and soul elements that will give people the chance to hear and think about music in a fun new way.” With a unique and energetic sound that has yet to be duplicated, It’s clear that Jazz Copeland has succeeded in doing something that hasn’t been done before, and they’re making some pretty awesome music doing it.What do you want visitors and locals to know about Jazz Copeland that they may not already know?
A: I want people to know that each of us LOVE WHAT WE DO! I have never played with a group of individuals who is always excited EVERYTIME they perform. Its addictive to be around. I want people to know we really love making music and we want to make sure that everyone leaves a Jazz Copeland show excited to come back for more. We also, we love laughing! I know, random, but we like to laugh a lot. We are always joking with each other and that makes it so much more fun when we perform because we know each other very well. We also like to get audiences involved by doing interactions between our sets.
