Local Spotlight, Meet Jay Revell Executive Director of the Downtown Improvement Authority!

Jay Revell is Tallahassee’s Downtown Improvement Authority’s Executive Director. Here’s some of what he had to say about this great city!
What brings you to Tallahassee?
I am an eighth generation North Floridian, so the Tallahassee area has always been home for me. I moved to the city in 2005 to attend Florida State University and fell in love with the place. Tallahassee is a great city and I’m proud to call her home.
In your opinion what makes downtown Tallahassee stand out?
Downtown is a special place. It’s where Tallahassee began. The collection of historical sites and beautiful public spaces are some of my favorite aspects of the area. I also love how many great hospitality industry businesses we have. I would put the Downtown restaurants and hotels up against anywhere! Having a great hospitality industry paired with a unique historical setting makes the area really special. Its also that combination that makes the hundreds of public events held here each year so great. A wonderful setting, great people, and family friendly entertainment really sets Downtown apart from any area of town
How long have you been a part of downtown Tallahassee (and what brought you it)?
I have always had a love for our Downtown. I became the Executive Director of the Downtown Improvement Authority in 2013 at the age of 25 and it was a dream come true. I am very passionate about building a better city in Tallahassee and I get to do that for a living. Its just a perfect job for me.
What do you want visitors and locals to know about Tallahassee that they may not already know?
If there is anything visitors and locals should know, it is that we are “Always in Session”. That refers to the fact that besides the legislative session each spring, there is always something to do Downtown. From great restaurants and nightlife to large scale public events and festivals, there is always something happening. The Downtown area has something going on at all times of day and that goes for the whole calendar each year!
What social media is downtown Tallahassee currently using? We are very engaged in social media. We have a Facebook page we regularly update, we have thousands of followers on twitter, and we even have our own Youtube channel with regular programming each week! People can follow us for updates on all the awesome things going on Downtown.
